When hundreds of gulls circle in the sky and the light is horizontal so that their black and white are merged together into silver, they look like a shoal of the herrings they live off. And so imagine the sea and sky to be interchangeable. Imagine turning them upside down like the globes of a sand hour-glass. Thus this painting.
